The identification of the sitter in this portrait as 'Lord Abingdon, later Earl of Lindsey' in the inscription on the label attached to reverse of the picture, would appear to be erroneous; no Lord Abingdon became Earl of Lindsey at the date of this portrait, although the titles were later united on the death, without issue, of Montagu, 12th Earl of Lindsey, in 1938, who was then succeeded by Montagu, 8th Earl of Abingdon, as 13th Earl of Lindsey. Moreover, none of the Earls of Lindsey or the Earls of Abingdon who lived at the time this portrait was executed was a Knight of the Garter.
