Lot Essay

The sitter was the third son of Evan Murray and brother of John (1745-1822), who was created a Baronet on 3 July 1795 and resumed the original surname of the family, MacGregor. Like his elder brother, the sitter travelled to India and served as Adjutant-General in the Bengal Army, rising to the rank of Colonel. He married Eliza Tuting. He was killed while aboard the East Indiaman Lord Nelson, possibly in 1802/3 when the ship was captured by the French Privateer Bellona (she was subsequently re-captured three weeks later), or on her fifth voyage in 1808 when she was separated from the fleet during a storm and not seen again.
