These picture are after Stubbs's celebrated set of four shooting scenes, now in the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven. Creswell Crags was part of the estate of the Duke of Portland, where Stubbs was working circa 1766-67. The four original canvases were exhibited at the Royal Academy over four successive years, 1767-70, and were engraved by William Wollett between 1769 and 1771 (see S. Deuchar, Sporting Art in Eighteenth Century England, New Haven and London, 1988, pp. 114-119, figs. 86-93).
