AN EGYPTIAN LIMESTONE RELIEF
Old Kingdom, Dynasty V-VI, 2465-2150 B.C.
Sculpted in raised relief, in three registers, the uppermost with ten columns of hieroglyphic text, the four to the right containing the deceased's name and titles, the six to the left with part of the offering list, the central register with a man on the left facing right, with wide open eyes and full cheeks, wearing a pectoral and kilt, holding a bolt of cloth, seated upon a lion-footed stool, before an offering table piled high with "hundreds of loaves of bread and jugs of beer...", on the right more offerings including a trussed fowl, the bottom register with two oxen on the right, with two retainers on the left bearing haunches of beef, before them a column of hieroglyphic text reading, "bearing choice cuts"
