AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED AMPHORA (TYPE B)
Attributed to the Painter of Berlin 1686
Circa 540 B.C.
The panel on the obverse with two warriors in combat over the fallen body of another warrior, perhaps Achilles and Memnon above the body of Antilochus, the warriors each wearing a crested helmet and wielding a spear, the warrior on the right wearing a chiton, holding a shield with an undulating snake as the device, the warrior on the left nude, the scene flanked by female on-lookers, a bird flying above; the reverse with the same scene from the reverse angle, the shield device of the second warrior a tripod, the fallen warrior now in the fore-ground; with a lotus bud and palmette chain above each scene and rays above the foot; the lid with rays around the conical finial
