A ROMAN MARBLE RELIEF WITH GLADIATORS
Circa 2nd Century A.D.
The rectangular relief divided into three registers, each depicting gladiatorial combats between Samnites and Hoplomachi, the top register with two sets of contestants, the middle register with the Hoplomachus retreating from the Samnite, the bottom register preserving only a Samnite lunging forward, the Samnites each with a high crested visored helmet (galea), an oblong shield (scutum), a greave on one leg (ocrea), and a protective arm band (manicae), holding a dagger, the Hoplomachi, a gladiator type derived from the Samnite, each similarly clad and armed, their shields not quite as long as that of the Samnites, their round helmets with open faces, broadening to protect the shoulders and neck, the relief with a raised border and register dividers, the upper border inscribed in Greek UMFERWS APOKAPPADOKIAS PA APARQENOPAIOS APA KAPPDOKIAS PA AR
