SHERIDAN, Philip. ANS ("P.H. Sheridan"), "Near Murfreesboro Tenn.," 4 May 1863. 1 page, small 4o. Cut from a larger leaf, the back with part of another ms. mentioning Shiloh. CASUALTIES OF THE STONES RIVER CAMPAIGN. A rare war-date letter of "Little Phil," written in the wake of the fierce fighting at Perryville, Ky., and Stones River, Tn. The Union Army, under Rosecrans, remained at Murfreesboro in the hopes of driving the Confederate Army south of the Tennessee river. From this location, Sheridan takes a moment to write: "I take great pleasure in endorsing every word of the within letter, and desire to return through the medical Inspectors my sincere thanks to the sanitary command for their almost invaluable services to my wounded men at Perryville & Stone River [Murfreesboro]."
