8o (202 x 128 mm). Stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait by F. Bordiga, 2 engraved plates, one folding. Contemporary pastepaper boards, red and green paper lettering-pieces on spine, edges stained yellow (edges slightly spotted); modern folding case. Provenance: "E.M." (stamped initials on lettering-piece).

FIRST EDITION. Baronio was among the first to experiment successfully with skin grafts on sheep. These were among the first closely controlled medical experiments using animals, and constituted "the first purely scientific research in the history of plastic surgery" (Garrison-Morton). Along with John Hunter's transplant investigations in the 1770s, Baronio's work formed the background for Dieffenbach's early investigations into transplantation and regeneration. A FINE COPY.
