Lot Essay

In the 12th to 14th centuries, Islamic artists were working in Sicily producing a wide variety of objects in ivory, mainly for the European market and often for Christian use (Randall, op. cit., p. 151). The present cylindrical casket dates from the earlier part of Siculo-Arabic production. A near identical example is to be found in The Walters Art Gallery (ibid, no. 229, pp. 156-157).
