Lot Essay

This silver group is a second example of a known composition by Georg Jungmair in the Württembergisches Landesmuseum, Stuttgart. As Helmut Seling notes in his definitive work on Augsburg goldsmiths, the group is notable for being the only depiction of Christ on the Road to Calvary of this type, known to have come from Augsburg (Seling, loc. cit.).
