Lot Essay

The concave upper edge of this relief indicates that it was originally cast for a very specific location, possibly the elaborate pedestal of a larger bronze. The delicacy of the work, almost all of which is executed in the wax, is reminiscent of other works attributed to Fanelli such as the bronze bust of Charles I, recently acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum.
