Lot Essay

The three gilt-bronze horses of lifesize proportions on the Basilica of San Marco, Venice, are the model for numerous similar reproductions in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their turbulent existence has seen them move to cities as wide ranging as Paris, Constantinople and now Venice, where they embody victory and the mastery of bronze sculpture (Haskel and Penny, loc. cit.).
