The Brig Vineyard sailed from New Orleans for Philadelphia on 1 November, 1830. The cook, Wansley, told a fellow crewman, Gibbs, of seeing $50,000 loaded and a plan was hatched to steal the vessel and cargo. The master and mate were attacked separately and thrown overboard (in the latter's case while still alive). The ship was eventually abandoned off Southampton and 3 of the crew perished in the surf. Four men made it ashore and immediately denounced the others. Gibbs and Wansley were condemned and hanged in New York. It is not known if Gibbs' confessions to many other piracies have any basis in fact. McDade 337. (2)
