William Fagg, writing about the present lot in Christie's London catalogue of 17 June 1980, lot 306, states: "This bell is a royal piece for the Sultan of Foumban, as can be seen from the device of the double-headed snake under the board on which the leopard is carried. The carriers also wear loincloths, a practice introduced by the great Sultan Njoya under the German occupation."
