Lot Essay

By the same hand as a drawing of The Death of Lucretia from a private collection, sold in these Rooms, 16 May 1970, lot 4, illustrated, formerly in the collections of Sir Peter Lely, Thomas Hudson, and J. Richardson jun., D. De Grazia, Bertoia, Mirola and the Farnese Court, Milan, 1991, no. D attr. 6, fig. 252. The drawing's style was described by Diane De Grazia as being close to that of Mirola because of the 'masculinity of the facial features and the single contour lines' and similar to Bertoia because the 'geometric aspect of the child'.
