Lot Essay

In his entry for this rare carving William Fagg writes that this is the most interesting Bembe work known to him, clearly made for use by the Kongo, but he does not relate what led him to attribute it to the Bembe rather than the Kongo. Josef Herman was told that it came from the collection of a M. Bergier.
