A study for one of the prophets painted a fresco on a compartment of the ceiling of the chapel of Saint Nazarius and Celsus in Santa Maria Maria presso San Celso, Milan, N. Ward Neilson, An Early Drawing by Giulio Cesare Procaccini, Master Drawings, 1979, VII, p. 26, fig. 1, for a reproduction of one of the compartments. From 1602 to 1607 Procaccini decorated concomitantly two chapels of that church. The chapel of Saint Nazarius and Celsus was begun around 1604 and its altarpiece painted in 1606.
Two further drawings related to other prophets of the same ceiling, one in the Gabinetto dei Disegni del Castello Sforzesco and another at the British Museum, London are both illustrated in M. Rosci, G.C. Procaccini, Soncino, 1993, p. 58, the latter sold in these Rooms, 10 July 1979, lot 63. Nancy Ward Neilson dated the former drawing quite early in the preparation for the decoration for the church, A Drawing by Giulio Cesare Procaccini, The Burlington Magazine, 1985, CXXVII, p. 804.
We are grateful to Professor Giulio Bora for confirming the attribution of the present drawing on the basis of a photograph in a letter dated 2 May 1997.
