A study for Saint Gregory in the right foreground of Mainardi's painting of the Mystic Press, executed in 1594 for the apse of the church of Sant'Agostino, Cremona (fig. 1). In the centre of the composition, the figure of Christ is locked in a wine press, surrounded by the Four Fathers of the Church and the faithful crowd. The wine press, in which a cross is inserted, is operated by three angels, and Saint Gregory is collecting Christ's blood in a chalice. The figure of the saint in the picture is very close to the one in the drawing: the only difference concerns the stole around the saint's neck, not shown in the drawing.
Andrea Mainardi was a pupil of Bernardino Campi and worked with Antonio and Giulio Campi. The present drawing clearly reflects the stylistic influence of the Campi workshop. Mainardi worked mainly for Cremonese churches, and only a few drawings survive which can be connected with paintings.
