Lot Essay

Possibly related to the altarpiece with Saint George that Cavedone wanted to give to his native city of Sassualo in 1621. The council of the Commune records the proposal made on 28 February of that year and the answer 'che se lo voleva dare lo dasse' ('If you want to give it, do it'). It is not known if the altarpiece was ever executed, E. Negro and N. Roio, Giacomo Cavedone, Modena, 1996, no. 371. A drawing of The Madonna and Child with Saint George and Aurelia (?) also possibly related to that commission is in a private collection, E. Negro and N. Roio, op. cit., no. 399a, illustrated.
