The drawing is in fact a copy after Veronese's lost Cuccina altarpiece, formerly in S. Francesco della Vigna, circa 1561-2. The altarpiece is known through an engraving by Antonio Boratti, P. Humphrey-S. Holh, More on Veronese and his patrons at S. Francesco della Vigna, in Venezia Cinquecento, V, no. 10, 1995, fig. 7.

After the figure of Saint John the Baptist in Carletto Caliari's altarpiece of The Virgin appearing to Saint John and another Saint, formerly in the collection of the King of Rumania (fig. 1).
A drawing by Strozzi, very close in handling to the present sheet, is in the Louvre, M. Newcome Schleier, Le dessin à Gênes du XVIème eu XVIIIème siècle, Paris, 1985, no. 52, illustrated.
