A pair of Longton Hall horses and grooms
Circa 1755
After the Meissen models by J.J. Kändler, modelled as two rearing white and pale grey and brown dappled stallions restrained by a black and a white groom in Turkish dress, wearing a pale-blue and white turban, long pink robe wth gilt collar and cuffs, a striped red and gold sash and yellow boots and each with a dagger in his belt, on flower-encrusted pad bases (both with restoration to front legs and restored through bases of tails, some slight restoration along firing cracks to bases)

Lot Essay

Pairs of these horses are extremely rare. The pair in the Schreiber Collection in the Victoria & Albert Museum is illustrated by Bernard Rackham, The Schreiber Collection Catalogue (1915), Vol. 1, pl. 1, fig. 29 and also by Bernard Watney, Longton Hall Porcelain (1957) pl.63B-C. Another pair was sold at Sotheby's, 16 October 1956, lot 133.
