Lot Essay

The Beauchamp album of Tiepolo drawings sold in these Rooms, 15 June 1965, contained twenty drawings of the same subject, lots 19-38, illustrated.
The inspiration for the series, one of the most numerous of Domenico's variations on a single theme, probably comes from the oval painting now in the Prado, one of several works produced by the Tiepolos for the Royal Chapel at Aranjuez not long before Giambattista's death in 1770. A drawing in the collection of the Landgrave of Hesse is numbered '125', the highest yet recorded.
