Lot Essay

Comparable to a drawing of the same format and technique by Velasco in the Uffizi, Florence, D. Angulo and A.E. Pérez Sánchez, A Corpus of Spanish Drawings, 1400-1600, London, 1975, I, no. 306, pl. LXXVIII. The Uffizi drawing is related to a picture in the cloister of Toledo cathedral, attributed to Velasco on documentary evidence.
Velasco was, with Blas de Prado, one of the most important artists in Toledo, where he was active from 1571 onwards. His draughtsmanship shows an Italian influence, especially that of Federico Zuccaro. Two further drawings by Velasco are in the Chaveau Vasconcel collection in Barcelona, D. Angulo and A.E. Pérez Sánchez, op. cit., nos. 307-8, pl. LXXVIII.
