A Travelling Lap Desk
Anonymous, British mid-19th century
A mahogany and brass bound folding lap desk, originally owned by G.F. McDougall an officer on the whaleship RESOLUTE. With compartments to hold pens, ink wells, envelopes and other elements. The desk is fitted with a hidden compartment which hides three small drawers. The outer edge of the desk is bound with rounded brass trim and is fitted with recessed brass handles. Fixed to the inside is a typed account of the history of the desk. Included with the desk is a bottle of "Resolute" wine, two hand written notes about the desk and the ship RESOLUTE, a press clipping with an article about another desk made from the wood of the RESOLUTE, a piece of the original felt lining, an account of the RESOLUTE and her voyage to the arctic and a letter from the former owner of the desk telling it's story. The desk is missing the hinged interior panel which would form the writing surface.
