Lot Essay

A study, with numerous minor differences, for the picture by Stella in the Art Museum, Princeton, exhibited in the Grand Palais in 1982, P. Rosenberg and Sir John Pope-Hennessy, La peinture française du XVIIe siècle dans les collections américaines, Paris, no. 101, illustrated.
The Princeton picture, whose original signature and date have been erased, has been dated by Pierre Rosenberg to Stella's mature years. This is supported by Félibien's mentioning of a picture of the same subject just before The Judgement of Pâris dated 1650 and now at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford.
