A fine late 19th-Century 8-inch diameter EMPIRE CLOCK GLOBE,
PATENT 19460, probably by George Philip & Son Ltd, the cartouche overlaid in the Pacific Ocean, made up of twelve chromolithographed gores and two polar calottes, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours, the Greenwich Meridian graduated in degrees, the ecliptic ungraduated, the oceans showing steamship routes with ports of arrival and departure and distance in nautical miles and submarine cable lines, the continents with nation states labelled in yellow or green, or else in orange to denote part of the British Empire, and showing rivers, towns and cities (some light rubbing), with brass finial and pierced meridian half-circle pointer reading off the chamfered brass horizon hour dial with Roman numerals in black and red, mounted on the geared mechanism connected to the threaded brass arm with moonball, raisedon a slender decorated brass column to turned and stepped brass plinth base containing the clockwork mechanism, the underside stamped MADE IN FRANCE, 375 (crossed through) and 528 -- 16in. (40.6cm.) high
