Lot Essay

Many of Carmontelle's drawings were made with the aim of using them in a magic lantern. They were heightened with strong colours on thin paper which allowed the image to be projected onto the wall. The present portraits are similar in technique to the underdrawing of most of these sheets: they were, however, executed as independent portraits, mounted directly by François Renaud.
