Lot Essay

A version of the first drawing was in the collection of Marius Paulme (sale, Paris, Galerie Georges Petit, 13 May 1929, lot 123, pl. 84), and versions of the second drawing are in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, and formerly with Paul Prouté, W. Lundberg, Lavreince, Nicolas Lafrensen, peintre suédois, exhib. cat., Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, 1949, nos. 55-6, pl. XIII. These two compositions were engraved by Janinet under the titles 'Pauvre minet, que ne suis-je à ta place' and 'L'élève discret'.A drawing of a Proposal close in handling to the present drawing was sold at Christie's, New York, 12 January 1995, lot 131, illustrated.
