Antoine Laurent Dantan, who signed his works 'Dantan ainé' to differentiate himself from his younger brother, Jean Pierre (Dantan jeune), was born in Saint-Cloud in 1798. He initially trained with his father, the wood sculptor Antoine-Joseph-Laurent Dantan, but moved on to the École des Beaux-Arts in 1816, and studied there under Bosio and Brion. He first exhibited at the Salon in 1819, and submitted portrait busts, which were to prove his métier, in 1824 and 1827, before winning the Prix de Rome in 1828, the year he carved the present bust.
