Popular tradition states that the iron at the prow of the gondola represents Venice itself. The front "pettini" represent the sestieri (six quarters) in which the city is divided and the back one is Guidecca island; the double "S" bending should simulate the proceeding of the "Grand Canal". The "briccole" are the poles in the canals to which the gondolas are tied.
