The pose of this bronze was a popular one among Venetian sculptors in the late 16th and early 17th centuries and was produced, with variations, in the workshops of Vittoria, Campagna, Aspetti and Roccatagliata. This particular model, however, with its heavy-lidded gaze and provocative contrapposto, has been accepted as a creation of Roccatagliata's in recent decades (William Wixom in Cleveland, loc. cit.). Unlike many of the surviving casts, this example has the additional merit of showing Venus accompanied by Cupid.
