A late 19th-Century boxwood and lacquered-brass surveyor's sector rule,
signed Winter & Son. 21 Grey St. Newcastle on Tyne, both arms stamped with scales for horizontal distance, angle of dip and thickness on one side, the other with scale for degrees against 1 inch, one edge with bubble level and twin folding sights, both with twelve-inch rule, one arm fitted with a compass, the edge-bar needle with jewelled cap and clamp device, the hinged section with scale for Rise in inches per yard, contained in the original varnished leather carrying case -- 6½in. (16.5cm.) long
