An 18th-Century Butterfield-pattern compass-sundial,
signed Sartout Lain Paris, with liner dials for latitudes 40°, 45° and 50°, the engraved latitude are for 40° - 60°, with scroll decoration and bird support, the compass with blued-iron needle, the underside of the compass box engraved with a fortified house on a lake island within landscape decoration, the underside of the octagonal plate engraved with the names and latitude of twenty-five continental cities and towns, with part case -- 27/8in. (7.3cm.) long
