An unusual 18th-Century double-wheel waywiser,
signed on the finely engraved silvered dial B. Martin, London, the dial with shaped and pierced hands, further engraved The Outer Circle is Chains & Links, said scale numbered 1-10, subdivided in hundreds and labelled every 10 links, further scales for yards 1-220 labelled every 10 yards, Poles 1-40, miles I-XII subdivided and labelled every 2 furlongs, with an explanatory note engraved 16.½Ft=5½Yds. 1 Pole 40 Poles 1 Furlg. 8Furl.gs 1 Mile 100 Lks. 1 Chain., the glazed cover with turned rim and brass hook and eye, the mahogany frame with mechanism housed in lyre-shaped support to axle-housing, the two mahogany and iron-tyred 315/8in. (80.3cm.) diameter wheels with brass axle caps, the mahogany handle-arm secured to the frame by means of two heart-shaped brass wing nuts, with hinged arm for support when not in use, fixed to the underside of the handle-arm when in use by means of a brass catch (replacement) -- 55in. (139.7cm.) long
