Lot Essay

It is not certain whether the present plaque is by Jacques Laudin I or II, both of whom signed their plaques with the same formula of name and address on the reverse. The papal coat of arms might seem to offer the best guide to its date of execution, were it not for the fact that the heraldry has been slightly misunderstood. The arms are either those of Alexander VII Chigi (1655-1677), although they are normally quartered with the Della Rovere oak-tree, or of Clement XI Albani (1700-1721) with the omission of the horizontal band which should separate the star from the monticules.
