Anglo-Indian, second half 18th century


Extensively engraved overall with repeating borders and landscapes; the hinged lid opening to reveal an interior with a central opening for a mixing bowl, and two compartments with wooden lids and turned ivory handles.
Cracks; minor losses and restorations.
12½ x 7¼ x 7½ in.

Lot Essay

In her book The Art of the Cabinet (London, 1992, pp. 133-134), Marjorie Riccardi-Cubitt discusses the growth of the furniture industry in India, and illustrates an ivory-veneered table cabinet with almost identical foliate borders to those seen on the present caddy.
