CONRAD, Joseph. 'Twixt Land and Sea. London: Dent, 1912. 8o. Original green cloth, top edges stained green (spine a little faded, slight natural discoloration to free endpapers).

FIRST EDITION, THE RARE FIRST ISSUE BINDING (consisting of perhaps as few as 20 copies) with "Freya of the Secret Isles" on the front cover (instead of "Freya of the Seven Isles"). PRESENTATION COPY TO ARTHUR SYMONS, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Arthur Symons affectionately from J. Conrad. 1912"; with Symons' ownership signature on inside front cover. The poet and critic Symons (a central Nineties figure best known for the influential The Symbolist Movement in Literature, 1899) capped his long association with Conrad with the early study, Notes on Joseph Conrad (1925), issued a year after the novelist's death. In the second issue binding the misprint "Secret" on the front cover was buffed out and the word "Seven" printed over it; in the usual third issue binding the word "Seven" is correctly stamped. 'Twixt Land and Sea contains "The Secret Sharer" among its three stories. Cagle A16a(1), binding a (quoting a Dent official who thought maybe up to 100 copies in the first binding might have been issued); Smith 17 ("only about 20 copies" in the first issue binding "went into circulation"). A very good copy.
