"THE HOUSE OF LORDS FINISHED ME." Henry Arthur Bright was a wealthy young Englishman with literary leanings, whom Hawthorne had first met in Concord in 1852; the two would form an abiding friendship. Hawthorne declines a social engagement because of fatigue: "...I have several engagements to-day, which will tire me still more. The House of Lords finished me, last night, though I did not stay till the end of the debate. I hope the [senescent?] old [word indecipherable] will do something or other to exasperate the nation and hasten their own downfall for such a body of dull speakers is a nuisance that ought...to be abated..."
