JACOBUS DE VORAGINE (ca. 1229-1298). Sermones de tempore et de sanctis. Deventer: Richardus Pafraet, 6 March 1483.
2 volumes in one, chancery 2o (283 x 205 mm). Collation: [vol. I] s6-2s6 ( blank, r index to the Sermones de tempore, 2 blank); a-z aa-bb8 cc6 dd8 (a1 blank, a2r Sermones de tempore, dd8 blank); [vol. II] a-z aa-ff8 gg-hh10 (a1r Sermones de sanctis, hh10r colophon, hh10v blank). 476 leaves (without the first two blank leaves). 46 lines and headline, double column. Type: 1:90GB (HPT type 1B). Seven- to three-line initial spaces. Rubricated: three large red Lombard initials with reserved ornament colored yellow and foliate pen-flourishing filled with green and yellow wash, red Lombard initials, capital strokes and paragraph signs. (Repaired marginal tear to 1:q2, lower blank corner of 1:a2 torn away, small tears to initial blank, slight dust-soiling to first and last pages and to some upper margins, occasional minor marginal dampstaining, library blind-stamps in margins of a few leaves.) Contemporary German blind-stamped brown calf over wooden boards, the covers divided by triple fillets forming a frame and central compartment with saltire pattern, stamped with rosette, Agnus Dei, fleur-de-lys and "IHS" monogram tools, the tools not in the standard binding tool repertories, pair of brass fore-edge clasps, two index tabs (rebacked, rubbed, endpapers renewed, remains of later paper label on front cover). Provenance: 15th-century inscription on first blank leaf including the name Johann Oligfligerus amd the date 1491; a few small neat 16th-century marginalia; [M]ichael ?Kidder--h (partly effaced early inscription on last leaf); New York City, General Theological Seminary (bookplate, stamps, sale Christie's New York, 1 October 1980, lot 19).
RARE EDITION FROM THE FIRST PRESS AT DEVENTER, first edition printed in the Low Countries, and the first to include the Sermones de sanctis (other than a Low German version, Cologne 1482, Goff J-184). Only one complete copy is held by an American institution (Maryland Diocesan Library, on deposit at the Peabody Institute).
