A VERY RARE EXAMPLE OF AN 18TH-CENTURY SUBSCRIPTION PUBLICATION IN WEEKLY PARTS. On the front wrapper of each part the following proposal for publication: "I. That is shall be printed on the same Paper and Letter as the Specimen annexed; and that, for the better Accommodation of the Purchasers, Four Sheets of the Book will be delivered to the Subscribers every Week, stitcht in blue Paper, at the Price of Six-Pence... The following Numnbers will be regularly published every Saturday Morning, without Interruption, till the whole is finished; and, besides the Number of Prints, that were in the former Edition (which will be amended in this) several new Copper-Plates, necessary for the Work, will be engraved, and all given Gratis to the Subscribers... N.B. When this Work is compleated, the most material Additions and Corrections will be collected together, and printed, in order to perfect those Gentlemens Books, who purchased the former Edition." Although incomplete, this series comprises an unusual example of subscription publication in the eighteenth-century. According to American Book Prices Current, no other set (or partial set) has appeared at auction.
