FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, LARGE-PAPER ISSUE. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper: "Lady Mount Temple from Walt Whitman America 1886." Whitman kept in contact with Lady Mount Temple over the years, even receiving a gift of a "beautiful vest of knit stuff, wool & silk" (Correspondence, ed. E.H. Miller, vol. IV, p. 170).
