FIRST EDITION. Inscribed by Horace Traubel to R.W. Gilder in 1905, and with original broadside announcement for the dinner pasted on the verso of the first flyleaf. On the broadslip, titled "At the Complimentary Dinner, Camden New Jersey, May 31 1889," Whitman has added in manuscript after the printed opening: "My friends, though announc'd to give an address, there is no such intention." Whitman has also excised one phrase from the printed text. The printed version as it appears in the book on page 5 reproduces these changes made to the broadslip. Traubel edited this volume and Gilder gave one of the addresses. Gilder makes a note in pencil next to one of the sentences in his remarks: "'Do you say that?' said Whitman looking up at me."
