Just 18,956 half eagles were struck in Charlotte during the course of this year, with this issue being the second rarest of 24 half eagle issues. Minted in Charlotte, this coin almost made its way back home before the loss of the S.S. Central America.

This is the only example of this issue certified by PCGS as part of the S.S. Central America treasure. A die crack extends from the rim through I of AMERICA to an arrow tip, and continues to the eagle's wing. The Charlotte Mint was opened for business in 1838 and remained in operation until the advent of the Civil War in early 1861.
