Despite a relatively high mintage of 260,775 coins, this is a very scarce issue, especially in higher grades. This is confirmed by auction records of appearances throughout the 1990s, with just 10 examples grading AU-55 or finer appearing for public sale from 1990 through 1999. Compare this to branch mint issues of this same year and grade range, with nine 1848-C and 13 1848-D issues being offered.
