Choice Mint State 1856-S Eagle
Believed Finest Known
$10, 1856-S MS-63 (PCGS). Bright medium yellow gold with fully lustrous prooflike surfaces. A lovely specimen, the finest certified by PCGS and likely finest extant. Only 68,000 pieces struck; few of the extant specimens exceed EF. The present offering exhibits a dusky splash of toning on the left side of the reverse, most likely a vestige of shipping materials, either wood or cloth, which adhered to the coin during its aquatic rest. A beautiful specimen: its condition unimprovable and its pedigree incomparable.
