A much rarer date in Mint State than its circulation strike mintage of 757,899 pieces might suggest. This date is typically found in VF to EF, and sometimes AU. As David Akers noted: "In Mint State condition, the 1854 is definitely rare." The present specimen is the only example of the date graded MS-62 by PCGS; just two other examples of the date (from all numismatic sources) have received higher grades from that organization. A splendid opportunity.
Further details
Date plainly repunched at 1, 5, and 4; no repunching at 8. A thin, tenuous line is all that remains of the left side of the crossbar of the A in STATES.
