Die notes: Obverse with Liberty Head of somewhat different "personality" from the federal issue and quite unlike even the preceding Wass, Molitor (nie Dubosq) die. W.M. & Co. on coronet. 13 stars surrounding; date 1852 below. Date irregularly aligned, numerals widely spaced, 1 high, 2 low. Die deeply basined (dished), a very unusual feature. o Reverse die identical to preceding (also used for the 1850 Dubosq $10). Die state: Obverse from earlier state than that detailed by Kagin; on the present specimen: Crack from neck to star 1 to near dentils. Crack linking stars 1-2. Traces of cracks, not continuous, at stars 3 and 4. Crack near star 11. Crack from star 12 intermittently to star 13, continuing to 2 (1852). Tiny crack upward from highest bead in hair. · Reverse cracks: Dot upward through S.M.V. Near top of wing at left, through CALIF. Through top of letters in GOLD. Through base of TEN. Separately through D (of TEN D.). PCGS Data: This is the finest of 52 examples from the S.S. Central America treasure certified by PCGS.
