Kellogg & Humbert, San Francisco. Gold ingot. · No. 914. · $315.16. · 900 Fine. · 16.94 Ounces. (CAGB-685). WITH ATTACHED COINS as recovered from the ship. A cluster which in itself is a treasure display.
Attached by mineral deposits to several gold coins, mostly double eagles but also including at least two territorial issues. The fabulous Dubosq & Co. $10 rarity offered in this sale was loose with this cluster and was lifted from it when the cluster was brought aboard the recovery vessel. As the serial number of this ingot is part of a sequence recovered from the S.S. Central America, it seems likely that this group was in a pouch or separate container included along with the main treasure.
Approximate dimensions of the bar are 42 mm. x 52 mm. x 14 mm. The face is inscribed NO. 914 16.94 OZ. 900 FINE $315.16. The right edge is marked KELLOGG & HUMBERT, with the remaining edges blank. The reverse is not visible, due to the attached coins and mineral deposits. Two corners are missing for assay. Total weight of the mass is 32.65 ounces, yielding 15.71 ounces for the additional gold coins and other mineral deposits.
This suggests a face value in the neighborhood of $290. Our best count suggests 23 additional coins, mostly eagles and double eagles.
We do note two Augustus Humbert $10 gold coins, including an 1852 1 variety with the characteristic die crack prominently visible. Net gold weight for the ingot alone 15.25 ounces with a value of $20.67 per ounce.
