The collection represented our attempt to cover the period from about 1910 to 1970. The collection was put together slowly over many years. The plan was to collect one, or two paintings, by artists of this period. We always waited until we found a first class representation of the artist's work - it was then purchased subject to budget considerations. We never had a list of names that had to be collected; instead we waited for a 'good' painting. We were also very fussy about the condition of the paintings - no restoration or damage. We also preferred, if possible, to keep the original frame. Our simple collecting philosophy was - good art, good artists, good condition and well presented. We hope that the new owners of these works will enjoy them as much as we have. N.R. & G.M. McGrath, October 2000
