According to Fergus Clunie (Yalo i Viti, Suva, 1986, p.171), dishes of this form "carved to represent a split leba (Syzygium neuroclayx) fruit, held the scented coconut oil with which a priest annointed himself before invoking his god, or were used as a palette for his face and body paints."
